Organization Name

The Disability Network is a nonprofit organization that serves people with disabilities in Genesee County. TDN has been serving the community for over 30 years. We offer various programs and services to help people with disabilities live their most independent lives. TDN’s mission is to revolutionize communities to be inclusive and accepting, where all people thrive in the quality of life they create.

Program Description

We offer a number of different programs and services. Please see them listed below.

SELF-ADVOCACY: The Disability Network has dedicated staff for advocacy services. We can help guide you to the resources and processes to ensure you are receiving. We also operate from the perspective of helping consumers be self-advocates. That means we don’t do things for you, we do them with you.
We assist people with disabilities with understanding their rights, whether it be with regard to Social Security, Medicare Part D, or Medicaid. We have experience advocating in employment, educational, and community settings. .

INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS: TDN offers a variety of ways to increase your independent living skills, whether this is through counseling services, employment services, navigating transportation, by joining TDN Connect our inclusive health, recreation, and leisure programming.

INFORMATION AND REFERRAL: We provide information about disability-related issues, resources, and services to people with disabilities, families, professionals and the general public. Staff, the majority of whom are people with disabilities themselves, are available to listen and assist with locating resources and developing strategies for individuals to resolve barriers including, but not limited to, the following areas: Housing issues, Transportation resources, Employment issues, Benefits and funding resources, Accessibility Discrimination and legal rights finding, adaptive equipment to enhance independent living , community supports and services

NURSING FACILITY TRANSITIONS:
The goal of the program is to raise awareness that community-based living is a viable alternative to nursing facility residency and support their transitions to a more independent home. We can support you by connecting with the following services: Advocacy, Person-Centered Planning, Locating affordable housing, Independent living skills, Locating household items, Family & social relationships, Debt and credit issues, Community resources, Assistive modifications, Housing assistance, Locating transportation, Peer Support

EMPLOYMENT SERVICES:
Employment may be a personal goal and TDN is here to help. Our employment team can support an individual in the following ways: Job training, Job club, Workshops, Benefits planning, Resume support

PEER SUPPORT:
We work to connect people with each other to build personal support networks for shared learning and strengthening individual choice. We host a variety of peer support groups as well as offering individual counseling appointments or you can find peer support through attending TDN Connect activities.

YOUTH SERVICES:
TDN’s youth programs provide all youth the opportunity to develop positive peer-to-peer relationships, independent living skills, career exploration, and connections to community resources. TDN partners with MRS and local high schools to bring our programming to the students of Genesee County. Our workshops in the classroom relate to Advocacy, Self- Advocacy, Peer Support, Job Exploration, Workplace Readiness, Work Base Learning, and Counseling on Post- Secondary Education. We also offer a weekly Young Adult night for ages 18-20 to join us for an evening of food, friendship, and fun. We believe everyone deserves to have a safe space and a community to call their own.
