Motherly Intercession- Reading and Counting Success Plus (RACS+)*
Motherly Intercession’s mission is to empower children and foster a stronger community by preventing the cycle of intergenerational incarceration. When Mrs. Cochran, our founder, noticed the gap in services for children of incarcerated parents in 1999, she created a reading club that would meet on Saturdays at the local library. Over the past twenty-four years our non-profit agency has expanded our programs to help families impacted by incarceration in Genesee County. We believe in the African Proverb, “it takes a village to raise a child”, and we are dedicated to being a part of each child’s village in partnership with their other supports. This village consists of parents, caregivers, community-based organizations, and various systems such as health care and education systems so that a child has a greater quality of life in their community.
Therefore, Motherly Intercession offers children, family, and adult services. Our children’s services include our Reading and Counting to Success Plus (RACS+) After-School Program, RACS+ Summer Day Camp, and N-Touch Ready 4 Real Life Program for middle and high school aged youth. Family services include Bonding from a Distance Children’s Visitation Program in the Genesee County Jail, Strengthening Incarcerated Families Program, Health Care Enrollment with Genesee Health Plan. Adult services include Parenting While Incarcerated in partnerships with the Genesee County Jail, and the Fatherhood Focus Group in partnership with the National Fatherhood Initiative.
Academic
Motherly Intercession provides an
inclusive environment for children to
safely grow and master their skills.
Peer mentors provide academic
support and tutoring through
assisting with homework, engaging in
fun activities, and data tracking on
growth and performance in math,
language arts, and reading.
Social
Motherly Intercession is a safe
environment that allows for
supportive friendships to be made.
Our peer mentors are available for
guidance, advice, and as role models.
It is also a space to work through
conflict constructively to build
interpersonal skills.
Emotional
Through daily emotions tracking we
build the skills for emotional
regulation and recognition and how
to work through emotions felt.
Through normalization and validation
our children learn that it is okay to
have and express emotions, and how
to do so appropriately.
Why Enroll?
Every child has a voice, and every child
deserves to be heard. At Motherly
Intercession we strive to amplify each
child’s abilities, while empowering
them to pave a path of possibilities
and success for themselves.
Motherly Intercession allows children
creative freedom through various
projects and has a system in place to
reward appropriate behaviors and
actions while teaching life skills.
We believe in the African Proverb, “it
takes a village to raise a child”, and we
are dedicated to being a part of each
child’s village in partnership with their
other supports.
