Genesee County Prevention Coalition- Teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA)
We are a diverse group of people and organizations working within the community to develop new and effective ways to prevent and reduce mental health and substance use disorders. We believe in our collective and individual responsibility to ensure healthy, safe and productive lives for all Genesee County residents through innovative strategies and community partnerships.
Purpose
- Create and sustain a community prevention system within Genesee County that incorporates the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF). A planning process for preventing substance abuse and misuse.
- Provide leadership and collaborate efforts in mental health and substance use disorder prevention in order to impact the primary behavioral health problem(s) at the community level.
- Educate its members on current prevention planning concerns and bring awareness of the coalition and its efforts to the community at large in hope of changing knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), is a nationally recognized certification program operated by The National Council for Mental Wellbeing. Teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA) teaches teens in grades 10-12, or ages 15-18, how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among their friends and peers. The goal of the individual providing Mental Health First Aid is to help support an individual experiencing a mental health crisis until they receive professional help/services. There is robust peer reviewed evidence that supports the program’s ability to save lives, improve mental health, expand knowledge of mental illnesses and treatments, increase services provided, and improve mental health literacy.
