At Genesee County Prevention Coalition, we are a diverse group of individuals and organizations working together to prevent and reduce mental health and substance use disorders. By assessing community needs, building capacity, planning strategically, implementing effective programs, and continuously improving our efforts, we provide essential information and resources to support the well-being of our community through innovative strategies and partnerships.

Over the past decade, marijuana has become the most popular substance among youth in Genesee County, overtaking alcohol since recreational use was legalized. Between 2018 and 2022, marijuana use among 11th graders rose from 23.7% to 24.9%, while alcohol and prescription drug use saw lower rates. This shift is linked to a growing perception among teens that marijuana isn’t as risky as once thought, coupled with less disapproval from parents and peers. The increased availability of marijuana through retail stores and advertising is also playing a major role in this trend.
To better understand these dynamics, an observational study was conducted from May to August 2023 as part of the Drug-Free Communities (DFC) grant. The study focused on 27 marijuana retail stores across Genesee County, examining both the risks and protective factors they pose to the community.
