This initiative promotes the health standard of no use of alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, or other drugs by youth under 21, emphasizing that youth substance use is not inevitable and that making One Choice leads to healthier outcomes.

We believe in our responsibility to ensure healthy, safe, and productive lives for all Genesee County residents. Over the past decade, marijuana has become the most popular substance among youth in Genesee County, overtaking alcohol since recreational use was legalized. Between 2018 and 2022, marijuana use among 11th graders rose from 23.7% to 24.9%, while alcohol and prescription drug use saw lower rates. This shift is linked to a growing perception among teens that marijuana isn’t as risky as once thought, coupled with less disapproval from parents and peers. The increased availability of marijuana through retail stores and advertising is also playing a major role in this trend.
To better understand these dynamics, an observational study was conducted from May to August 2023 as part of the Drug-Free Communities (DFC) grant. The study focused on 27 marijuana retail stores across Genesee County, examining both the risks and protective factors they pose to the community.
